Adventure Sports Coaching Conference

Adventure Sports Coaching Conference

Plas y Brenin, the National Mountain Sports Centre in Snowdonia, North Wales, is hosting their inaugural Adventure Sports Coaching Conference to explore the role of coach developers in adventure sports performance. The conference aims to bring together academics, researchers, coach developers and coaches from a range of universities, national governing bodies of sport and related organisations with an interest in this under-researched field.

The intention is to demonstrate the relationship between research, coach education and coaching practice. At the heart of the conference is the philosophy that all good coaching is individualised. To facilitate individualisation, coaching has to be responsive, adaptable and flexible. That responsiveness, adaptability and flexibility are dependent upon effective coach education and on-going coach and leader development that is built on evidence, coaching expertise and participant needs. It is the development of the coach educator that has a major part to play in ensuring that all coaching meets the individualised needs of the adventure sports participant.

The conference itself will be held over two half days in January 2018, starting at lunchtime on Thursday 11th with a buffet lunch followed by keynote lectures in the afternoon and a range of themed seminars that will involve several related short presentations and discussions. An evening meal will allow further discussion and networking, with a final presentation completing the day. The following morning a keynote lecture will get the ‘ball rolling’ and be followed by two series of themed seminars that would lead to a concluding session preceding lunch and departure.

Seminar themes will include:

  • The changing demographic
  • The integration of practice and theory
  • Creating an adaptable and flexible coaching workforce
  • Inclusivity in Performance Coaching
  • The experiences of female coaches, leaders and instructors
  • Case studies integrating research and practice.

This event is endorsed by the Association of Mountaineering Instructors (AMI), the British Association of International Mountain Leaders (BAIML) and the Mountain Training Association (MTA), and is eligible for 1 CPD point for their members.

Attendance at the Adventure Sports Coaching Conference will update British Canoeing Coaches CPD for 18 months.
