This 3 day Alpine Essentials course is designed for climbers and mountaineers who are looking for some skills and knowledge to help contribute to being more independent in the Mountains of the Alps. The course is non-residential so it may suit those who already have a holiday booked and are looking for a short Alpine introduction to help give them greater confidence in climbing mountains later in their holiday. It is also ideal for those who have done very little or no Alpine mountaineering before but would like some input to contribute to their existing UK experience.
The advantages of this great 3-day course are 3 days of the very best instruction from a British Mountain Guide and the flexibility of you choosing your own accommodation and time things so that you can carry on your holiday/mountaineering/climbing trip and put your new-found skils to the test.
The non-residential approach allows you to chose your own accommodation in the Chamonix valley, which ranges from camping to luxury hotels. This may help you budget your trip in order for you to possibly stay for longer and enjoy your own adventures.
A few days with a British Mountain Guide introducing new skills and climbing Alpine peaks can be all you need to inspire and reassure you on new adventures climbing and Mountaineering in the Alps.
Skills and techniques that will be covered practically on the mountains and glaciers include; Glacier travel, crevasses rescue, alpine rope work, using Alpine huts, route finding and navigation, alpine hazards and weather, planning, acclimatization, coaching movement over rock and ice.
A range of Plas y Brenin Alpine courses will be operating from Argentiere in the Chamonix valley. This is a perfect base as it’s a stunning venue surrounded by some of the best and most famous peaks of the entire Alps. The Chamonix valley is a great climbing/mountaineering base with an exciting and dynamic network of climbers and mountaineers from all over the world.
Argentiere has some spectacular views of the Mount Blanc range and great access to the mountains and glaciers.
The Alpine Essentials 3-day course is practical and operating in the mountains as much as possible. Access to the mountains out of the Chamonix valley can be quick and easy, so we get to spend as much time as possible putting new skills into practice. We would intend on visiting mountain huts and if weather and conditions allow, climb peaks along the way.
Acclimatization is key, so the altitude gained will suit a 3-day period and at a progressive rate. Decision making and planning will be shared in order for you to learn as much as possible while on the course. Possible venues include the famous Mer de Glace or Grand Montets for an introduction to movement over rock/ice on a glacier. With a journey through the mountains over glaciers and rocky peaks introducing and consolidating existing skills making you feel more at home in the Mountains of the Alps.
