The Big Expedition Leader Development Weekend (21-22 April)
Working closely with our partners at Outlook Expeditions, we've put together an exciting new development event for expedition leaders.
This April we're dedicating the entire National Mountain Centre to a weekend of development for expedition leaders. Open to anyone who is currently or would like to become involved in leading or supporting expeditions in the outdoors, this weekend is an ideal opportunity for professional or voluntary leaders, teachers or highly motivated outdoor enthusiasts to expand their knowledge of this growing marketplace.
Informal, practical and fast paced this information-packed weekend has been carefully designed to help you develop your skill and knowledge in a variety of areas.
Aside from the rich programme of workshops there will be a wide range of industry professionals to talk to about career development and further training opportunities, along with captivating keynote speakers, and expedition organisations.
Staying at the National Mountain Centre for two nights you'll also have plenty of time to swap notes with other leaders on the places you've been, the problems you encountered and the solutions you came up with. This unique mix of experience, information, advice and contact is a rare opportunity for any expedition leader. Whether you lead or support expeditions in the UK or across the globe you're sure to leave a more informed, inspired and confident leader.

Workshop on offer include:
Navigation - The smart way, Digital mapping GPS, Tracking Devices and EPIRB
A practical session for those who can already find their way effectively using a map and compass which allows you to embellish your technique with a few little-known tips and tricks. If your navigation is effective but feels a little clunky, this is the workshop for you.
One for the techies amongst you, the second part of this workshop showcases all the latest navigation technology and what it can do for you as an expedition leader. Find out what is the extents and limitations really are and when you can and when you can't rely on it.
Listen to the experts as they bust the myths and urban legends that surround the second and third generation of these truly remarkable electronic tools.
Legal Issues
Where do you stand when things go wrong and what should you do you protect your group and yourself. Join our legal experts as they take you through some of the possible scenarios and explain the best course of action to avoid getting into those situations and how to react if you do find yourself in a tricky legal bind.

What would you do if the worst happened? In this workshop you'll learn tried and tested strategies for dealing with a range of serious problems that occur on expeditions and you'll find out how, when and why you should implement them to steer you and your group through the crisis with confidence.
Leadership At Altitude
At altitude, the rules change completely - anyone can be affected at any time, even you. So it's vital that as a leader you understand how to reduce the possibility problems occurring, how to spot symptoms early, how to react when a member of your group falls sick as a result of altitude sickness. You'll also discuss the considerations and complications that face a leader in these situations.
Medical Issue and Remote First Aid
Staying healthy and dealing with sickness and injury in remote locations is something all expedition leaders should develop extensive knowledge of. As a leader on an expedition there are sure to be times when you are the only one to turn to for immediate medical care. If you are at all unsure of your practical first ability you should sign up for this practical outdoor workshop.
Water Based Expeditions
Expeditions on rivers, lakes and oceans can be an amazing experience, but the challenges of getting the conditions right and the grop prepared can be hard to overcome.
River Crossing and Dealing With Water Hazards
Trekking in remote parts map bring the hazard of crossing rovers a potentially disastrous activity! This very practical workshop will get you trying out techniques and make you more awarre of the dangers involved. This workhop will also cover damping and managing groups around water.
