Course Overview

Join us on this five-day guided traverse attempting to take in all 14 of Snowdonia's highest peaks. Admire the view from the top of some of the National Park's finest mountains on this exciting week-long adventure. Snowdon, Tryfan, the Glyders, Y Garn and all the Carneddau peaks.

You should be 18 years old to attend this course.

Who's it for?

Previous hill-walking experience and the ability to feel comfortable on grade 1 scrambling ground is necessary as this will be encountered on the ascent of Crib Goch and Tryfan. This will be a physically demanding week with long and challenging days out so you must be reasonably fit and used to full days out in the mountains.


Course Content

On the first day we will practice and revise the skills needed to tackle the bigger peaks. Over the following four days we will attempt to visit all fourteen of the 3000ft+ peaks in Snowdonia, visiting some of the most stunning locations. The four hill days are likely to be split as follows:



  • Snowdon Horseshoe, 3 peaks plus other smaller summits (This includes an exposed grade 1 scramble)

  • Walking the Carneddau Ridge to include 6 peaks (a big day out!)

  • Scramble on Tryfan, 1 peak (sort of rest day!)

  • Traverse of the Glyders to include the remaining 4 Peaks


We will also look at the following technical areas during the week.

Accommodation For This Course

Plas y Brenin Main House

Your course is based at Plas y Brenin, The National Mountain Sports Centre in Capel Curig, North Wales, LL24 0ET.



If you are staying with us,

If you have chosen to add accommodation onto this course or holiday it is usually in the main house in a comfy en-suite room (normally shared with another guest). Each room has tea and coffee making facilities and all bed linen and towels are provided.

This includes accommodation the night before your first day. Your room will be available from 6pm. On your last day you will need to vacate your room by 10am. It is sometimes possible to arrange to stay an extra night please phone 01690 720214 for availability and cost.

Secure storage facilities, showers and toilets are available for you to use on your departure day once you have checked out of your room should you need them, please ask at reception.

Also included, if you chosen to add accommodation, are all your meals - breakfast, packed lunch, afternoon tea and freshly baked cakes and a three course evening meal. Please bear in mind an evening meal is not provided on the night before your course or on the last day of your course but our bar will be serving meals from 7.00pm until 8.45pm.




If you are are not staying with us but coming in each day,

If you choose to come in daily for your course or holiday you will need to arrive ready for a 9am welcome talk on the first day. For the rest of your course or holiday you will need to be here for 9.15am. We return from a full day of activity, usually in time for tea and cakes at 5pm (included).

There are more activities from 5.30 - 6.30 on some days of your course or holiday, please check on the first day.

For most of our awards and qualification courses there will be further evening sessions on some days which you need to attend, please check on the first day.

There is an 8pm adventure talk by one of our coaches on Saturday, Monday and Wednesday evenings which you are welcome to come to. Find out more about the upcoming talks here.

On the final day you will be finished by 5pm.

For courses based on-site our bar will be serving lunches from 12pm until 2pm or you are welcome to bring a packed lunch.

If your course is based away from the centre then you will need to bring a packed lunch with you. Each evening our bar serves evening meals from 7pm until 8.45pm if you wish to eat here.

What Equipment Do You Need To Bring?

  • Warm outdoor wear - at all times of year e.g. walking trousers (shorts in summer), thermal layers/base layers, fleeces, good quality walking socks

  • Warm hat, gloves, neck gaiter/buff, sun hat

  • Walking boots

  • Day rucksack (min 30 litres)

  • Rucksack liner (e.g. rubble bag or dry bag)

  • Drinks bottle

  • Flask

  • Lunch Bag/Box

  • Personal first aid kit

  • Waterproof jacket and trousers

  • Head torch (winter months)

  • High factor sunscreen

  • Midge repellant (summer months)

  • Notebook and pen

  • Compass (Silva Expedition 4 recommended)

  • Maps - OS 17 Snowdon & Conwy Valley 1:25,000 (and OS 115 Snowdon 1:50,000 for navigation courses).Laminated maps are great as you don't need a map case and you can make notes, mark point etc. (Can be purchased from our shop)

  • Fine permanent pen (for writing on laminated maps)

What a super week I had and a full spectrum of winter weather to learn some new skills. I had never worn crampons but there was plenty of opportunity to get used to them with a fair amount of snow and ice on route. We also learnt some techniques for using an ice axe. Our guide was excellent, sharing lots of winter weather tips for the mountains.
I'm normally a summer hill walker (mainly the Lakes)and this week was challenging, but in a good way. A good level of fitness is needed, as I found you have to work much harder in winter conditions. Our longest day was around 23km and 5 peaks in the Carneddau.
I'll certainly do more winter walking now, but also recognise the winter conditions need lots of experience and more is learning needed for me. I'll be back to Plas y Brenin and thoroughly recommend them.

What did I like - Everything! The staff, the facilities, the stores and loan equipment/clothing, the drying rooms and especially the food.

If you want to walk for 5 days in the company of competent and friendly guides,having been filled with an excellent breakfast and then come back to a great room with a delicious evening meal then this is the place. The equipment store gives you access to the right stuff and by then of the challenge you may have your own shopping list based on experience.
The weather is part of the challenge.
Be prepared to walk up steep slopes for 2 hrs at a time and Crib Goch with a bit of ice and wind is not for the timid.
Doing the whole thing in daylight means you enjoy amazing scenes too.
in summary a great trip, value for money , 5 stars from me.

This is a really great 5 days to go and stretch your legs and to get out into the middle of nowhere. You get to take in a lot of snowdonia and the walking ranges from gentle hillwalking to grade 1 scrambles. To get all 14 in you will need to be reasonably fit and it is certainly more enjoyable the fitter you are! I would definitely recommend it and there are some amazing peaks that might not be such obvious choices on a first visit. The course is well run and the centre is a very sociable and relaxing environment to hang out in - i would recommend it even for solo travellers.

A 5 day / 14 peak challenge with the odds stacked against us, but with the expertise, knowledge and skills of the best instructors in the UK we made it.

70 mph winds, rain and 4 women, 1 peak on the first day and it was not looking good but with sheer determination and the amazing support and guidance from pyb we made it.

It was a great week even with the bad weather, we ended on the last day with a traverse across Crib Goch and summiting on Snowdon, our 14th peak!

Well done girls and a big thanks to Kaff, a true legend.

Fantastic leaders especially Phil who was with us for the first 2 days.
On a Challenge such as this, I would suggest a thourough check of the clients background and conditions. At least 2 people suffered from bad vertigo. Is this a course that they ought to be on? Were they honest on thier forms? They realised their weakness and did not have too much effect on the rest of the group.
Another person in a different group could prove to be a very different case.

14 Peaks - 2 Days - A True Fitness Challenge

Athers

If you are not a mountain goat, actively fit regular montain trekker or seriously into endurance sports, then do the challenge in 4 or 5 days. The 2 Day version of this course (available occasionally as an email newsletter special offer) allows no time for looking around, hardly any luch break and you "graze" as you walk. Lack of fitness will easily show as you begin to trail behind... can slow down the group and can result strains and pains. No amount of adrenlin will see you through.
