Mountain Leadership Qualifications

Mountain Training’s awards and skills courses are designed to educate and train people in walking, climbing and mountaineering. Their nationally-recognised schemes all follow a syllabus. In 2014 Mountain Training launched a new leadership scheme, the Lowland Leader, which is an accessible entry level award for walking leaders. There is also a new Expedition Skills Module for those taking groups camping and the Walking Group Leader has been renamed Hill and Moorland Leader.
The Hill & Mountain Skills Scheme is also new and Mountain Training’s first foray into personal skills as opposed to leadership and supervision. These courses are nationally accredited, supported by the mountaineering councils and Mountain Rescue England and Wales and ideal for anyone wanting some structured training to prepare them for their own adventures in the hills.
Before you attend a Mountain Training course you must register for the appropriate scheme through their Candidate Management System (CMS). For some schemes this may also involve mountaineering council membership (BMC, MCofS or Mountaineering Ireland).
