Our Welsh Winter courses are based at home in Plas y Brenin, deep in the heart of Snowdonia’s National Park. The mountains are accessible with moderate walks into high North and East facing shady slopes and cwms. Whilst the winters are a little unpredictable the last few years have delivered some excellent snow and ice conditions, ideal for learning essential winter skills. But whatever the weather, our flexible course programme means we can take full advantage of whatever Mother Nature serves up.
Two days of intensive winter skills. Use and choice of ice axe and crampons, equipment selection, winter navigation and self arrest will all be covered.
Designed for those with some hillwalking experience who want to travel the mountains confidently at a time of year when the length of day may make visibility uncertain. The winter time offers great opportunities for developing navigation and safety skills in the mountains. The course also includes an introduction to ice axe and crampon technique.
An opportunity to attept to tick off all of Wales' 3000 foot peaks in one week. The unpredictable weather at this time of year calls for more time to take on the challenge, that's why this five-day attempt will even allow time for summer hillwalkers who are new to the winter-experience to receive essential winter skills tuition along the way.
Although the fundamental techniques involved in navigating are the same regardless of the seasons, winter brings with it unique challenges. This course will equip you with the skills and knowledge to help you deal with navigating in fading light or poor conditions, anticipating and dealing with increased risk from flooding or high winds and how to plan and follow your route in extreme weather.
Making the most of the unpredictable weather experienced during the winter months in North Wales, this course is aimed at those summer hillwalkers who want to extend their skills to four seasons. Use and choice of ice axe and crampons, winter navigation, ropework for travel over rock, snow and ice as well as emergency bivouacking skills and selection of equipment are all covered during this five day course.
