The Future Leaders Fund

Training as a volunteer leader in the outdoors Here at Plas y Brenin National Mountain Centre, we believe in a healthy sense of adventure, and encourage participation in a Sporting Habit for Life. The most effective way to make sure as many young people as possible across the country are getting out, getting fit and getting happy is to train the trainers. We believe in the vital role that volunteer leaders play in their local communities, and we understand that the barriers to access that all-important training are more challenging than ever.

The National Mountain Centre trains people on the basis of talent, enthusiasm and commitment.  We believe it should never be on the basis of your ability to pay. That’s why we have created this fund to help support the volunteer leaders of the future – The Future Leaders Fund – to make sure that the next generation has the opportunity to enjoy a healthy and happy sporting habit for life.

What Is The Fund For?

Training as a volunteer leader in the outdoorsWe have a pot of money available to help volunteer leaders in the outdoors access the training they need and deserve in order for them to perform better as a leader or coach in mountain sports.
Currently aimed at furthering hillwalking, mountaineering and climbing in England, the funding available comes in the form of a direct subsidy on training or assessment courses at Plas y Brenin, The National Mountain Sports Centre.
The amount of subsidy is linked to an index of areas where those interested in becoming outdoor leaders may be lacking in opportunity or advantage.
In short, The Future Leaders Fund makes the training you need as a volunteer leader more affordable.

The training and assessment courses included are:

  • Climbing Wall Award Training and Assessment
  • Single Pitch Award Training and Assessment
  • Hill Skills
  • Mountain Skills
  • Lowland Leader Training and Assessment
  • Hill and Moorland Leader Training and Assessment
  • Expediton Skills
  • Mountain Leader Training and Assessment (Summer)

Who Can Apply?

What If I Am A Volunteer In Wales?

Training as a volunteer leader in the outdoors The DofE in Wales and the Mountain Training Trust have been awarded funding from the Millennium Stadium Charitable Trust to support the training and qualification of Welsh volunteer DofE leaders.
The fund will enable leaders to gain additional experience and qualifications which in-turn will enhance the opportunities for young people, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds, to take part in a DofE programme.
By selecting proven and committed Volunteer Leaders through a fair process requiring referees, 75% bursaries will be offered across Wales, for a range of courses available at Plas y Brenin , The National Mountain Sports Centre.
The training courses available for subsidy include mountain leading, orienteering, trail cycling, paddlesport, canoeing, first aid and climbing wall instruction.
The mission of youth charity The Duke of Edinburgh's Award is to inspire, guide and support young people in their self development and recognise their achievements. We feel very strongly about enabling every young person, irrespective of background or circumstances to take part and succeed, helping them surmount the barriers that many face.
DofE research shows that the DofE has a remarkable impact on young people, especially those who face the biggest difficulties. Through their participation, they gain confidence, team working skills and an enhanced sense of self-worth, for many, the DofE is a life-changing experience.
The Mountain Training Trust (MTT) seeks to provide the best quality outdoor experiences at affordable prices to enhance opportunities for the safe enjoyment of the outdoor environment. The MTT manages Plas y Brenin on behalf of Sport England.

What More Can I Do?

Training as a volunteer leader in the outdoors Because this is a contribution funding grant, you still have some money to fork out to cover the balance of your course fee. If that is a problem for you, you may be able to raise the additional money by a simple fundraising or sponsorship event or process.
With a little effort and imagination, this personal fundraising can be extremely effective.
To help you in this area we’ve put together a sponsorship and fundraising pack full of ideas, advice and suggestions to help you raise the cash.

Dowload the future leaders fundraising packDownload the sponsorship and fundraising pack here.

We appreciate you’ll still have to find the cash to pay for your travel to and from Plas y Brenin so we even have ways we can help you there. You can make further savings by taking advantage of our travel share message board to arrange car sharing or, if you choose to travel by train our free minibus shuttle will pick you up and drop you off at Llandudno Junction station, saving you the expensive 20 mile transfer cost.
