An interview with: Simon Hale

Plas y Brenin - outdoor Instructor interviewed How did you first become involved in the outdoors?
I was in the scouts and our school had it's own climbing wall.

What did you do before you were an outdoor instructor?
How long have you got?
Amongst several other things I was a baker, a landscape gardener, a builder and a ski instructor.

What’s the best trip you’ve ever been on?
A six week rock climbing tour of the USA.

Where would you most like to go next and why?
Patagonia. For the wild beauty, trekking and rock climbing.

what is your idea of the perfect weekend?
On Saturday a cooked breakfast (the full set), then skiing in fresh powder with my beautiful wife until my legs are too tired to go on any longer. On the Sunday another 'full set' before rock climbing all day in the warmth of the sun.

What 3 items do you carry outdoors that would not be without?
Sunglasses - it pays to be optimistic.
Spare sunglasses.
Lipsalve - because there's nothing worse than dry lips.

What luxury do you miss most on expeditions?
A sofa

What do you carry on big trips that you could do without but take anyway?
A sofa (No not really!)
Too many spare gloves - because cold hands suck!

What other interests do you have aside from the outdoors.
Gardening, biking (road and mountain), cutting wood with a big chain saw and drinking fine wine.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever had?
Don't take life too seriously, you'll never get out of it alive.

What’s the most important lesson you’ve ever learned?
Time waits for no man!!

What is the best T-shirt you ever owned?
One that said: "On powder days you have no friends".

What is the best Movie you’ve ever seen?
Sideways

What is your favourite Snack?
Nuts and raisins or frozen chocolate bars

If you had to be a cartoon character, who would it be?
Dick Dastardly

Who is your hero?
Winston Churchill was an incredible man.
