Area of work at Plas y Brenin
I work across the paddlesports and mountaineering department. As the lead person for NGB qualifications in paddlesports I deliver coach education courses at all levels from level 1-3. In addition to this I deliver sea kayak and open canoe qualification up to 5* leadership and white-water awards up to 4* leadership standard. As an active mountaineer I work on mountain training courses including winter skills. I assess the Mountain Leader, Hill and Moorland leader and lowland leader award. My personal area of interest is performance coaching and developing coach education. I am currently studying for an MSc in performance coaching through Stirling University.
I have done extended expeditions in a number of places around the world including white-water kayaking in southern Siberia, 10 days; Open canoe expedition on the Mountain River in Canada's North West territories, 16 days; the White River 10 days, Chapleau River 8 days and Missinabi Rivers in Ontario, 16 days; Sea Kayaking and first ascent rock climbing expedition in north west Greenland, 21 days included 6 first ascents ranging from HVS to E2.
All of the above expeditions took me to some amazing places but special amongst them was paddling amongst the ice flows at the foot of a calving glacier at Umanaq in NW Greenland.
I am predominately inspired by being outdoors. I am also inspired by positive people who try to get as much out of each day as they can. I enjoy finding adventure close to home as well as distant places. I like to keep my activities varied so I am equally at home on my mountain bike as I am in the hills or in a boat. I get a kick out of watching others progress with my help and nothing beats watching my daughters enjoy the outdoors as much as I do.
The Master's degree is taking up a lot of my spare time at the moment but this should be finished later this year. So this year adventures will predominately be within the UK, St Kilda and the Scilly Isles are the target before the summer. A second visit to Greenland is in the pipeline as is Alaska and another secret destination!
