I am involved in the delivery of the range of mountain and climbing courses in summer and winter. I deliver skills courses and Mountain Training award courses from introductory level through to Winter Mountain Leader and Mountain Instructor courses. I am also involved in the delivery of practical sessions for ULCAN outdoor leadership & coaching courses and the delivery of young person's courses.
Through the year emphasis changes from one facet of mountaineering to another. In the winter I enjoy getting involved in Scottish winter climbing and the unique sense of achievement that comes from a day of climbing a classic winter route; the days when the waiting for conditions and working hard pay off. I also enjoy exploring quiet corners of the Alps on skis - this year the Dolomites and Adamello regions of Italy fed my hunger for quiet peaks and great ski descents. In summer the mind turns to rock climbing and some alpinism - highlights include topping out on Jebel Rum after climbing The Pillar of Wisdom, deserving that giant pizza in Chamonix after traversing the Aiguilles and watching the monkeys run around whilst walking back out from a successful trip to climb the Shipton Route on Mt. Kenya.
One destination is hard to choose, places stand out for different reasons. Wadi Rum was amazing - going snorkelling in the red sea and then climbing amazing sandstone mountains made for a great trip. The Alps are great too with so much to do all year round. Climbing in the USA is a dream whether it is desert rock or suffering on a big wall.
Getting out having adventures and fun with friends in beautiful places.
Hopefully some ski touring in the spring followed by some alpine climbing later in the year. I am also pretty keen to get to Colorado and do some mountaineering and climbing in the Rockies.
