Coiling a Rope

By Ian Boorman

There are many ways of coiling a rope and it does not have to be a complicated affair. So, to stop your rope getting into a tangled mess, I have found the simplest way for me is as follows.

Step One

Coiling a Rope

Find the middle of the rope, the easiest way is to take both ends and run all the rope through until you find the middle.

Step Two

Coiling a Rope

Hook your thumb through the loop created at the middle of the rope and take a full arm span and place it around your neck.

Step Three

Coiling a Rope

Now reach across with the opposite hand to the rope coming down from your hand, pull through another arms span and place over your neck. You should repeat this process with alternate hands until there is about 2 full arm spans of rope left.

Step Four

Coiling a Rope

A. Allow both sets of coils to drape around your neck, then remove the rope and centre it on your hand.

Coiling a Rope

B. Now wrap half of the remaining rope around both sets of coils, taking time to make sure that they are neat and tight.

Coiling a Rope

C. Finally pass the ends of the rope through the loop created.

Step Five

Coiling a Rope

A. Place the rope on your back.

Coiling a Rope

B. Now bring the remaining rope under your armpits and cross the ropes behind your back and bring the ends back to the front.

Coiling a Rope

C. Then simply tie the ends together.
