Racking Your Gear

By Ian Boorman

How you carry your gear on your harness is a very personal thing. Below are just a few tips that I feel help when multi pitch climbing.

Tip One

Racking Your Gear

Carry your wires on three separate karabiners . Small, Medium and Large. Rack them on your harness in that order so you know which bunch to grab!! It is a good idea to overlap wires e.g have a medium on the small bunch etc. Just in case you end up dropping a bunch !!

Tip Two

Racking Your Gear

Rack both your friends and hexes in order as well, smallest to biggest. Carry a variety of lengths of quickdraw, short, medium and long and rack them in order too.

Tip Three

Racking Your Gear

To shorten a four foot sling into a quick draw.

Racking Your Gear

Simply place one karabiner through the other.

Racking Your Gear

Then clip both the remaining strands. (To release; attach one karabiner to the runner; unclip the other karabiner and pull the sling; then reattach the karabiner).

Racking Your Gear

Tip Four

Racking Your Gear

Carry eight foot slings around your body for ease of access.

Tip Five

Racking Your Gear

Carry your belay plate, nut key and prussik.s round the back of your harness. This keeps them out of the way when climbing and hopefully makes sure you do not belay off a gear loop by mistake.
