PLAS y BRENIN AND The University of Central Lancashire (UCLan)

UCLAN at Plas y Brenin

Degree Opportunities for Outdoor Professionals

Sports and outdoors students from the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) benefit from collaboration with Plas y Brenin, the National Mountain Sports Centre, to help deliver selected practical elements of their Outdoor Leadership and Adventure Sports Coaching degrees.

A combination of UCLan and Plas y Brenin staff jointly deliver a range of modules at the National Mountain Sports Centre that develop the students’ practical, coaching and leadership skills.  This includes mountaineering, rock climbing, white water kayaking, sea kayaking and canoeing.
Alongside the degree students the University’s Institute of Coaching and Performance work closely with Plas y Brenin on research projects, like understanding the judgement and decision making processes of experts in adventure sports, that help to influence the future development of the outdoor profession.

Undergraduate courses available at UCLan
(for 2018/19 entry)

Outdoor Adventure Leadership BA (Hons)

Canoeing with UCLan studentsThe BA (Hons) Outdoor Adventure Leadership programme focuses on the key themes of leadership, coaching and education. Furthermore, the modules encourage core knowledge and understanding to be developed through interactive lectures, seminars, workshops and practical sessions. Both individual and group activities will be used to promote independent learning, interaction and reflective practice.

Assessment for learning is prioritised throughout the course to promote integrated, progressive and synthesised knowledge. As students, you will be encouraged to approach all modules with an open mind and form your own values and opinions based on both the practical and academic evidence available. This will culminate in your own research focus within the final year of study.

Professional development is also a key focus throughout all modules with theoretical underpinnings reinforced through a number of weeklong residential experiences. Additional opportunities for practical experience are available through a structured enhancement programme run outside of the teaching semester. Furthermore, the acquisition of National Governing Body qualifications is encouraged and offered.
