A weekend designed to make you fully avalanche aware and enhance your ability to enjoy the winter mountains in safety. We will make use of the official Be Avalanche Aware guidelines to help you develop your decision making, and will focus on developing your skills to gather relevant information, plan accordingly and enjoy safe days out in the winter mountains.

This course will be useful for any climber, mountaineer or skier wanting to be more knowledgeable about snow and avalanches and represents a great CPD opportunity for trainee or qualified Winter Mountain Leaders and International Mountain Leaders.

The Objectives

The main areas we will cover are:

  • The use of the BE Avalanche Aware Guidelines
  • How to use the Scottish Avalanche Information Service (SAIS) forecasts and website
  • How to plan a safe winter mountain journey and how to make decisions once you are out
  • Understanding what influences your decision making - the human factors
  • The use of avalanche safety and rescue equipment

Day 1 - A theory day based around Allthsellach looking at planning and understanding avalanches, including practical sessions on using transceivers in the hotel grounds

Day 2 - Putting the theory into practise by planning s afe journey into the mountains and looking at the snow pack.

Experience Required

The ability to walk in crampons and use ice axe is essential. You should be able to look after yourself in the winter mountains.

Your instruction, accommodation, meals, in-course transport and equipment hire are all included in the price. You'll stay at Alltshellach, a fantastic hotel owned and run by HF Holidays in comfy en-suite rooms (normally shared). The hotel has efficient drying rooms so when you come in from a day out you can dry out any kit for the next day and there are also laudry facilities. The hotel has three comfy lounges to relax in, one of which has free WiFi plus a swimming pool to ease aching muscles. There is also a cosy bar to relax in and is always well stocked with Scottish whisky and local beer. Alltshellach also has a handy shop for any little essentials you may have forgotten such maps, poles, socks, gaiters, sit mats, postcards and a range of toiletries.
