You'd like to try hillwalking and want to learn the essential skills you need. Spending two days on this accredited Mountain Training in Snowdonia's spectacular hills with our highly qualified instructors sharing their expert knowledge with you is a perfect introduction to hillwalking for anyone. You'll cover where to walk, what to wear, how to plan and follow routes, a little about the environment and what to do if things don't go to plan.
You'll have gained the skills and techniques to be independent in the hills.

What to Expect
During the two days you'll cover all the essentials;
Walking Skills - what things you should consider while out walking and what can make life easier (pace, nutrition, movement skills)
Navigation Skills - including using basic features and symbols, using a compass, navigation strategies and electronic devices
Weather - how it affects the hills and your day out
Clothing and Equipment - how being suitably dressed and equipped can make the difference between a good day out and a bad day out
Environment - how to minimise your impact on the hill and good practice
Hazards and Emergency Procedures - how to deal with any hazards you encounter and what to do in an emergency
You must be at least 18 years old to join this course at Plas y Brenin (or 14 if accompanied by a parent)

We want to help you focus on achieving your goals so if you're staying with us, comfortable accommodation (with WIFI included) and good food are part of the deal, you don't need to think about sorting this out for yourself. Support is on hand from our friendly, and exceptionally well qualified staff, to help develop your understanding and personal skills. They also help you to formulate an appropriate action plan for your further development.
Walking trousers – usually these will be a modern ‘technical’ quick drying fabric
Hard Shell waterproofs
Gloves – need to be warm
Rucksack- ideally 35 litres min
Personal First aid kit Spare clothing – e.g. extra fleece, belay jacket, spare gloves, spare hat
Sun glasses particularly when sunny or snowy
Drinks bottle and/or flask
Compass (Silva Expedition 4 recommended)
Maps - OS 17 Snowdon & Conwy Valley 1:25,000 (and OS 115 Snowdon 1:50,000 for navigation courses). Laminated maps are great as you don't need a map case and you can make notes, mark points etc. (Can be purchased from our shop)
Seasonally think about - Sun cream/ insect repellent/ spare food/sun hat
You need to be reasonably fit. But we'll tailor the course to the needs of those attending.
