Overview

You're an experienced rock climber who wants to introduce people to climbing. Whether you're a parent, a volunteer or an outdoor centre instructor, this course prepares you to supervise safe climbing and abseiling sessions on single pitch crags and artificial structures. Our friendly, highly qualified instructors will equip you with the technical competence, teaching skills, and management and decision making, skills to become a single pitch instructor. The course runs over three days for those who have not completed Climbing Wall Instructor Training . A two-day version is available for people who have completed their Climbing Wall Instructor Training.

What to Expect


Typically day one will be spent on personal climbing both on traditional climbs and sport climbs. Day two will be spent looking at working with groups, both climbing and abseiling, at single pitch venues. The third day will be spent looking at personal climbing and working with groups on climbing walls. There will also be some evening sessions on background information.

Experience Required

You must;

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Be a member of a mountaineering council: BMC, Mountaineering Scotland or Mountaineering Ireland
  • Have led 15 routes which must be graded rock climbs with traditional protection.
  • Have led 15 routes at a climbing wall.
  • Have led 5 routes which must be outdoor bolt protected sport climbs.
  • You should also; be an experienced indoor and outdoor rock climber have a genuine interest in climbing and the supervision of groups

We would need a minimum of one week’s notice prior to your course start date – please contact reception to learn more.

When it comes to equipment, at Plas y Brenin we have a wide range of top-quality kit for you to use, all included in your course fee. This means if you’re just starting out, there’s no need to rush out and buy a load of expensive gear, and if you’re already pretty well kitted-out, it’s a great chance to try something new.

Plas y Brenin will cover the whole Mountain Training syllabus. We have access to some of the best single pitch venues in North Wales all within easy drive of our centre.
