  • Specialise

A weekend of exploring classic mountaineering ridges and gullies in the Scottish winter. You'll be guided up some classic mountaineering routes in the Western Highlands by our friendly, highly qualified instructors. Over the weekend, they’ll work with you to hone your skills on steeper snow and winter scrambling terrain. An evening avalanche lecture will help you to improve your knowledge of safe travel in the winter environment.

This course will be delivered from our scenic winter base in Scotland, the Alltshellach hotel in North Ballachulish.

The Objectives

We'll aim to cover the following topics by incorporating them into mountain journeys:

  • Consolidating your proficiency in winter ropework skills and techniques
  • Avalanche risk assessment and avoidance
  • Terrain - we'll be tackling classic rocky  ridgelines (up to Grade II) and snow gullies
  • Mountaineering decision making,

Your mountain days will hopefully take in some of the major peaks via ridges and/or gullies, but this will be dependent on the weather and snow conditions. Final decisions will be taken by your course instructor on each day, but they will involve you in the process to help shape your decision-making abilities.

* Please note: Itinerary is subject to weather and availability.

Experience Required

You should have completed our Scottish Winter Mountaineering course, or have had similar experience, and be confident in the use of crampons and ice axe. By this stage in your mountaineering career you will have a good understanding of the physical demands of a weekend out in the Scottish mountains and you'll be fit enough for two full mountain days of over 1000m of ascent by the more challenging routes.
