New for 2019, Plas y Brenin are proud to present Snow & Avalanche Matters, a one-day event aimed at developing your snow and avalanche knowledge.
We are hosting a variety of workshops designed to help improve your understanding and knowledge of the latest research, innovation and thinking in avalanche avoidance. The day will feature practical workshops on a range of associated topics and plenty of opportunity to network and share knowledge and experience. The day is ideally suited for anybody with an interest in winter mountaineering, snowsports and winter safety.
One CPD point will be available for all AMI, MTA, BAIML and BMG members.
Have developed your knowledge and ability to make decisions on winter hill days.
Be up to date on the Scottish Avalanche Information Service ‘Be Avalanche Aware’ initiative, and know how to share this knowledge with others.
Have become familiarised with Black Diamond and Mammut safety equipment and searches.
Learned more about how to safely plan a ski touring day.

A variety of 1.5 hour workshops will take place through the day - the programme has been structured so that all attendees will have the chance to attend every workshop
Alain Duclos; Avalanche expert for the region of Savoy, France and IFMGA Mountain Guide will talk about decision-making in avalanche terrain and will also deliver a keynote evening lecture focusing on decision-making while out on the hill.
Mark Diggins from the Scottish Avalanche Information Service will talk about the Be Avalanche Aware initiative and how to use the information they provide daily in the winter in Scotland.
Mammut and Black Diamon will run demonstations of their avalanche safety kit, with Plas y Brenin Instructors on hand to put you through your paces searching for buried transceivers.
Plas y Brenin British Mountain Guides and Instructors will run practical sessions designed to help you to plan successful days out in the winter hills and mountains.

If your course is based at Plas y Brenin, the price includes accommodation for the night before, and the duration of your time here. If you’re staying with us, we also provide delicious meals to keep you going as you learn, meaning you can concentrate on enjoying yourself. We may also be able to arrange a transfer from Llandudno Junction train station, subject to availability. We would need a minimum of one week’s notice prior to your course start date – please contact reception to learn more.
When it comes to equipment, at Plas y Brenin we have a wide range of top-quality kit for you to use, all included in your course fee. This means if you’re just starting out, there’s no need to rush out and buy a load of expensive gear, and if you’re already pretty well kitted-out, it’s a great chance to try something new.
What is included? All of your workshops, a lunch consisting of hot soup and a roll (additional meals can be bought through our bar), Tea & Cakes at the conclusion of the workshops, and an evening lecture from IFMGA Mountain Guide Alain Duclos on decision-making on the hill.
