The Secret of Peatlands
Location:Plas y Brenin
With the UK home to 13% of the world’s upland peatlands (or “blanket bogs”), it’s likely you’ve walked across some of them. Perhaps you’ve cursed as you went knee deep in the dark peat after misjudging how far you can jump, or maybe you’ve got stuck in a maze of peat haggs trying to reach your lunch spot. If this sounds familiar, you’ve found a degraded peatland! A massive 80% of the UK’s peatlands are thought to be degraded, which has led to huge greenhouse gas emissions, loss in biodiversity, erosion and poor water quality (and more than one pair of very muddy boots). So what can we do? The Welsh Peatland Sustainable Management Scheme is working across Wales to restore our peatlands, repairing these fragile landscapes to reduce carbon losses and greenhouse gas emissions, provide homes for some of our most iconic and threatened bird species, and even reduce the risk of flooding. We’ll be showing you the hidden wonders of the peatlands in Snowdonia and how you can help protect and preserve them.
