Kath is a full-time instructor at Plas y Brenin and a keen climber and mountaineer. She works on the full range of Mountain Training awards as well as skills courses for climbers and mountaineers. She really enjoys rock climbing and the Scottish winter.
Having missed the last two Scottish winters due to having a couple of babies, Kath is hoping winter 2019 will see her return to the Scottish winter programme and some good conditions up there!
Kath enjoys passing on her knowledge and experience to others whether they are new to it all or experienced climbers who want to become instructors or leaders. She loves being able to share her passion for being outside in the mountains or on sea cliffs with the people that she takes out in those environments.
Winter Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor (WMCI)
Highlights of Kath’s climbing career include climbing The Nose on El Capitan and the 1938 route on the north face of the Eiger (she talks about these climbs in her evening lecture). She has also been lucky enough to explore the beautiful, wild and sandy climbing in Wadi Rum, Jordan and climb Mount Kenya. Kath’s other passion is skiing, and exploring the mountains in winter, enjoying lots of ski touring in the European Alps, as well as a crazy trip ski mountaineering in the Atlas Mountains of Morocco. Consuming huge amounts of tasty tajine and mint tea in the hut after fantastic days out exploring the 4000m peaks of the Atlas; a perfect skiing adventure!
Kath’s current ambition is to get back to full climbing fitness having just had baby number two. She has enjoyed exploring some of the smaller hills in the area since having children but is keen to get back to the bigger ones too. Skiing is also always high on the agenda, each trip away always ends with more knowledge and a huge list of new places to explore. Long term, a return to the Himalaya or some of the peaks in South America would be great.
